The Batak,

Marco Polo wrote in the 13th century of paying tribute to the Batak to transit the strait of Malacca.  They were a warlike, aggressive people who resisted European missionaries and local armies well into the 20th century. Cannibalism, which was a method of social control for them, kept many potential invaders from their area. The Batak are the only known people to practice cannibalism and to have a written language. The modern Batak while not technically a “disenfranchised forest people” may certainly be classified as a marginalized people.

A richly inscribed Bamboo tube, with Water Buffalo horn as supporting rings on the top and bottom of the tube. The stopper is well carved in traditional form.
