The Batak. Marco Polo wrote in the 13th century of paying tribute to the Batak to transit the strait of Malacco, They were a warlike, aggressive people who resisted European missionaries and local armies well into the 20th century. Cannibalism, which was a method of social control for them, kept many potential invaders from their area for a long time. The Batak are the only known people to practice Cannibalism and to have a written language. The modern Batak, while not technically a “disenfranchised forest people”, may certainly be classified as a marginalized people.

This is one example of what is called a Dompit Raga or King's Wallet. To the best of anyone knowledge I spoke with no kings ever lost any money stored in one of these items.
