MAGIC BOOK, XL, BATAK, 8" X 5.5"SKU CAL259
Marco Polo wrote in the 13th century of paying tribute to the Batak to transit the strait of Malacca. They were a warlike, aggressive people who resisted European missionaries and local armies well into the 20th century. Cannibalism which was a method of social control for them kept many potential invaders from their area. The Batak are the only known people to practice cannibalism and to have a written language. The modern Batak while not technically a “disenfranchised forest people” may certainly be classified as a marginalized people. The Batak have an extraordinarily rich and varied culture which produces traditional medicine containers, scales, masks, canes, walking sticks, rice containers, and religious statuary. We purchase directly from the Batak people.
