SAGO PLATE, ASMAT, 32"SKU AMM600
The Asmat are considered the premiere wood carvers of the primitive world. They live on the south coast of New Guinea, the world’s second largest island inhabiting the largest tidal swamp in the world. Truly a pre-stone age culture, the Asmat came to world attention when Michael Rockefeller, the son of the Vice-President of the United States, disappeared while on an expedition in their area. The New York Museum of Art had an entire wing constructed to house the collection amassed during this ill-fated expedition. All true Asmat carvings must be purchased in New Guinea as there has developed a cottage industry in Bali and Java for producing “knock off” pieces presented as authentic Asmat carvings.
Sago is a staple of the Asmat diet. This is basically a serving dish for the Sago. Hand-carved and painted with the traditional three colors, this is an interesting addition to any primitive collection.
